Freezing cat saved by kind-hearted Scots in early morning rescue mission

Kind-hearted Scots came to the rescue of a cat stranded in freezing conditions when the fire service and SSPCA were unable to help.

An Aberdeen woman found the cat in a tree but was devastated when no one could help and had to leave the pet stranded around 1am this morning

But when Lisa Burnett woke up she was delighted to find that three men had come to the cats rescue and safely taken it down.

The animal lover said she was in tears when she had to leave the cat outside in -7 degrees after trying to entice it down for five hours.

She told the Record: “I was terrified that something was going to happen to the cat and it was going to die there.

“I phoned the SSPCA who told me to phone back around 9am but it was -7 outside.

“Then I went to the fire brigade on King Street as I didn’t want to call and waste their time but they told me I’d need to phone.

“A guy came out and said there was no way they could send their men up the tree as there were electricity wires running through the tree and it was icy – he said it was too dangerous.

“My friend came over with a ladder and he’s 6ft 6 so we thought he’d be able to get it but he didn’t even reach the first branch.”

Lisa tried everything she could think of – including a tea towel wrapped around a brush – to try and save the cat.

When nothing worked she posted an appeal on social media in the hope someone would have a big enough ladder.

ne man then saw the post around 6am and although he thought the cat would have died from the treacherous winter conditions, he found it alive at 6.30am.

After “putting the feelers out” for big ladders, Kane Stewart and his brother came to the rescue in their work van armed with cat food and a blanket.

Kane said: “I was happy to help. I met my brother around 8am and we used the ladders from the van.

“It took a while to get it down as it was hissing and not very happy but after petting it for a while it started purring and I got it down.

“It didn’t look too good when when we got to it but after a bowl of food and some treats it seemed happier before running away.”
